Huron Farmworkers Ministry was recently the successful recipient of $19,100. This is a local Norfolk charity that few knew existed. The Huron Farmworkers Ministry was born from a simple but profound Christian calling: to accompany migrant agricultural workers with dignity, compassion, and respect while they live and work in Canada, often far away from their homes and families for many months at a time.
These men and women make an invaluable contribution to our agricultural communities and to the food security of our country. Behind every harvest there are human stories of sacrifice, courage, faith, and perseverance.
The Ministry will use these funds to help the Norfolk Farmworkers with essential daily needs such as nutritious food, seasonal clothing, hygiene products, winter jackets, sweaters, T-shirts, blankets, and other necessities that help workers adapt to the changing Canadian seasons and living conditions. Each Thursday and Friday the Ministry provides community meals to the migrant agricultural workers at the Trinity Anglian Church in Simcoe.
Father Enrique Martinez emphasizes, “These gatherings offer a place where workers from different farms can come together to share experiences and build friendships. Coming together regularly helps to positively support the workers with emotional and mental well-being. We strive to make the farmworkers feel that they are valued members of our community. A simple gesture such as “hello or hola” can make the workers feel welcome and appreciated in the Norfolk Community.”
